1990 300SEL Transmission just quit

Hello everybody !I owned this car for a little less than 2 years and put about 20k miles on it. It had some startingproblems but ran and shifted perfect after starting. Until the other day, when I drove to the grocerystore, only 1 mile from my house. It hesitated shifting up, but did so after getting of the gas a little. After parking the car and doing my shopping, I came back after about 20 minutes and started the car, now it would not move shifting it thru every gear. It didnt even pull a little bit. After having the fluid and filter changed the next day it is still not moving or pulling . It is hard for me to believe, that the transmission would just die like this without any previous trouble. What should I look for before replacing the transmission. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Another Question, will a transmission from a 1992 300E [WDBEA30E4NB547024] fit my car[WDBCA25D4LA532057]?

Thank You and a happy New Year to everybody, Leo!

They sure do fail randomly. I drove to the lake one day last July, when I got home, reverse was just about gone and I had a weird swishing noise. Reverse band was blown, so I had virtually no reverse and a very unreliable 4th gear. It kept getting worse over the next 100ish miles until it was having problems shifting through any gear. I swapped it for a low miles used unit, which, 7k later, is still working great!

When did Mercedes start with the electronical controlled Transmissions? Wasn't that started in 1989 or 1990?

Usually there is a bit more warning, but if something catastrophic happened, who knows. I'm not the definitive source for this answer, but I believe that no, those trannies are not interchangeable. The '92 would have had an M104 motor (I think) whereas your car has an M103. Somebody here could give you a better answer, I'm sure.

Double check that your shifter linkage didn't come undone.
