Ignition coil spec - 1990 420SEL

Hi there,

Does anyone know the spec of the ignition coil for a 1990 420SEL. Mine's due a replacement and the original Mercedes ones are pretty expensive over here in the uk - is there any reason I couldn't use a cheaper 'generic' one, as I have a spare that I bought for my V8 efi Range Rover a few years back and never used....

I suspect that they are some strange sort of 'Mercedes only' thing but thought I'd ask!

Cheers, Martin

Would you consider that to be an upgrade from the original, or just a cheaper replacement? How long have you had it in and working (time/miles)?

Thanks for the quick response, Martin

MSD parts are quite good. It's not my pic but I posted it as an example. FORD also has a coil that would work or you could go FORD EDIS with a trigger wheel etc.

Thanks for the info, I'll keep looking into it.

Has anyone actually done it to their own car as I've heard of ignition control systems being burnt out/dying due to the wrong kind of coil being fitted....

I'd thought about going megajolt with EDIS-8 but I'm short on time at the minute!

Cheers, Martin
