Update!

Wow, two years have passed! And I still don't have them upholstered! Or the USB stuff all finished!

However, I did come into a w126 passenger seat in the same color as my w124 seats. Its heated too! So I re-pinned the harness for the new seat and discovered that I was having power supply issues with one of the power supplies. I had to disconnect it. I was curious if the heated seat worked so I put my meter on it and I got like 2.5 Ohms, then I threw the other power supply on it. It pulled 4.5-5 Amps for one set of elements. I tied both together but that was too much for the power supply. It kept turning off. So for now, I have the back set of element hooked up. They're only running at 10V or so as the power supply is cheap and dipped down real low under the load. Maybe I'll buy a more substantial power supply down the road... just like the upholstery!

W124 mounted, W126 on the floor:

W126 Mounted.

Hi JamesDean, great idea! I love it.

Maybe you are already doing this. I suggest sheeting your wood structure with a thin plywood. Glued and stapled ply will super strength your wood framing.

I owned a woodworking business in another life. I'm better in wood than car reapir!!

I was thinking if I can't figure out my electrical issue I'm going to make the whole damn car an arm chair!!

I had the back seat of a w124 but I've no room at all for anymore furniture! My SolidWorks drawing of the framing was weighing in at like 70 pounds!

My friend has a parts car w126, he might make a couch out of the reclining backseat lol.

That was part of the original plan too. I was going to get some 1/4" plywood and enclose everything, then wrap it with some upholstery foam and black faux leather/vinyl. But I never got around to it yet lol. I think I might soon though. Once I come up with something for this heated seat to operate safely (i.e a timer of some sort) as well as another power supply to power the other element.

As you can see I'm no carpenter. My woodworking skills are purely functional only lol.

I cannot imagine what shipping would be. The Mercedes chair is 40-50 lbs as it is! LOL

you miss the point.

Several local customers just spent $1,300.00 USD for recliners they don't like (for their man caves).

Market them...
$500 + S&H to get a man cave chair would be dirt cheap.
You can learn simple upholstery for the wood work, if you want to.

This thread just gets better and better. In college, I could have had furniture like that - cherish it while you can because marriage will see that chair on the curb.

However, I'm building a 4-car garage and I too was planning on taking some 190E 16v black leather sport seats and making two chairs out of them. I was going to find an old POS chair and mate that base to the seat.

I found a Franklin electric recliner in a rent-to-own business and bought it for $135. The 'renter,' had the power cord run through the chair's mechanics so it was low mileage. It cost me 50 bucks to buy the transformer and switch.

I like the idea of a dual arm rest MB seat for TV viewing but until one of you guys design and install a foot rest on one I'm sticking with the Franklin.

Agreed these need footrests! My original plan called for one however.. you ended up in a throne! I think an ottoman type deal would work best now.

Cool chairs/seats. Had a chance to meet up with jamesdean earlier today for a cruise control fix and had checked out the chairs. Very cool!

Thanks again for everything.

So I've been throwing around the idea of making regular furniture out of some nice MB seats for a while now...I think a few other guys on here have maybe posted about this too. I know one gentlemen was working on an office chair.

I sourced myself a set of seats (both front and back) from a 1990 w124 300E. The seats are in pretty good condition. The drivers side has two problem spots, one on the side (typical) and one tear in the bottom cushion. The passenger side is in perfect condition, little or no wear. The back seat looked to be in pretty good shape too.

I also got some of the controls and wiring harnesses

Cost: $65

So here's my plan:

1) Wiring Harness - Extend the factory wires out so that I can mate them with a computer power supply and the factory seat switch. DONE

2) Power/Wiring/Memory - Hook up all the wires to their final resting places. I'm not sure what I should do with the memory functionality. I'll certainly hook it to the power supply however, once the power supply is off..I'll lose the memory. Perhaps a small 12v battery? or just skip this all together?

3) Frame/Base - Build/Design a frame so that the seat is at normal height for a recliner and that it doesn't tip over when reclined. Furthermore, design it so that it looks ascetically pleasing. This is where I'm looking for ideas. Right now, its just bolted to some 2x4's on some carpet sliders. I just wanted to get it off the floor and make it easy to move around.

4) Armrests - As with any quality recliner, an armrest is a must. I'd like to use the factory Mercedes arm rest. Is is possible to install two armrests on these chairs? I know that people have swapped passenger and driver seats and thus have swapped armrests over..but has anyone ever put two in? Thats probably a ridiculous question as it wouldn't be very feasible inside a car.

and Finally,

Here are some pictures of the driver seat and the wiring harness I assembled. I used some wire I had here at the house to keep costs down. I believe its either 14ga or 16ga, it should be suitable for this project. The lengths are nothing like you'd see in a car.

have available a 1986 Mercedes 560 sel. It is black with tan leather, sunroof, power seats and also heated ( front and back seats) power rear recliners also. The vehicle does have 177K on the odometer. The car originally came from California and was transplanted to Ohio. From the clean carfax report, it was last dated in California ion 03/05/99 with 163034 miles.
