Same problem on my 92...I removed the cluster...took it apart and removed only the speedometer head, reinstalled the cluster so I can use the turn signals, see the other gauges, etc. and sent the speedometer in for repairs. It is a common problem...plastic gears break in the trip meter/odometer housing and new gears need to be installed...cost is aound 150 bucks plus shipping...I googled "clister repair for mercedes and got a number of repairs shops and contacted many for pricing.
I am waiting for the speedometer to be returned.
