Looking at a 1999 e320 wagon.

Interested in a 1999 e320 wagon. Are these prone to head gasket failure as the older models were? Anything other than service records to look out for? The car has 161,000 miles on it with little rust. Thanks.

This car would have the M112 V6 which does not have head gasket issues like the former M104. I have heard of problems with the harmonic balancer on early M112s. The spring perches are known to corrode and fail causing a dangerous collapse of the suspension. I do know that rust can be a problem on the W210. I would not even consider one that had rust, even if it only appears to be minor. The spring perches are known to corrode and fail causing a dangerous collapse of the suspension. A search should reveal more information on what particulars to look for. As always, a full inspection is a must before purchase.

Also, wagons have SLS suspension on the back, be sure to drive it and make sure the backend isn't saggy and swoony or expensive repairs will be needed. The M112 engine is prone to leaking valve covers, leaking "window" gasket on the front of the engine below the oil filter, and EGR tubes that carbon up - all are easy to address. You should listen to the catalytic converters, they are common replacement items at the age of your car and about $800 per side for plug-and-play. The socket on the transmission tends to leak trans fluid (an easy replacement), but neglect will lead to fluid wicking up the wiring and ruining the transmission control module. Lower ball joints on the front suspension should be checked - they are common wear items. Overall, look for records and signs of problems being taken care of along the way. A neglected W210 easily needs $3000-$4000 in the average shop to get problems fixed that were due to neglected maintenance.

I had a 2000 E320 wagon which suffered most of the above symptons at the 110k mark. A 160k car may have been sorted. Great car but expensive to fix in the shop. Mine suffered the oil leaks, vague steering, and cat problems. I am in Texas so luckily no rust, but I am originally from the UK where I have seen 210's in the scrap yard at 10 years old due to corrosion!
