Question door hardware

just got a 1988 560sel with a couple of issues...

1. passenger front door needs to be closed firmly so am looking for door closing hardware?

2. cruise control is inop....not a fuse issue...is there a relay involved?

any info would be greatly appreciated...

btw 1988 560sel with 248,000 was 3000.00

Hi Lyle, The door striker is adjustable, that's the sort of wedge-shaped piece on the BODY side of the door opening (not on the door itself). There are 2 screws that hold it on, you could try adjusting that striker towards the outside of the car. Or it might be mounted too high or low. If it "does" close, I wouldn't think you need anything but adjusting. Unless the car really got whonked on the right side and now nothing lines up.

On the cruise, you need to diagnose it, the 2 major players are what's called the cruise amplifier, which is a fancy name for the control unit for the cruise control, and the actuator, which is the piece that actually controls the throttle, you should see that towards the front of the engine with a rod leading back to the throttle body. There are other things involved that could cause it not to work, some that come to mind immediately is the speed input from the speedo (does the speedo work?) or the switch on the steering column that has the "set, resume, off" markings on it.

One other thing to check is that the speaker grille is on properly. When they get loose they can hit the B-pillar and simultaneously make the door hard to close, bend up the grille, and tear your B-pillar covering (time has probably done that for you already).
