140 steering angle sensor

What exactly does the steering angle sensor do? I know it's located on the steering wheel...what purpose?

On cars equipped with ESP (Electronic Stability Program) is provides information about the degree/direction of the turn so that the ESP system can maintain stability of the car by differentially applying braking.
