Question 124 transmission life???

I have an '87 300E w/ 150,000 miles on it. Within the last 2 weeks, an ATF leak has developed on the passenger side of the transmission. I have asked my mechanic what is required to fix it, and he told me that most likely the transmission would need to be dropped in order to replace the seal that has gone bad. (I don't know what seal has gone bad, but I know it is not the pan seal) He told me that dropping the transmission can be a risky deal being that it has 150,000 miles on it, and I might just want to rebuild it at this time. How many miles should I expect to get out of a transmission??? With the exception of the leak, it has been worry free, and still performs well.

You most likely have a leaking secondary pump o-ring. This can be changed without dropping the transmission.
I've had the same problem with my 88 300CE. The car has 125k (Guam) miles and the dried up o-ring has been the only problem so far.

The only other problem that I've seen on these transmission is the primary pump bushing wear. Other than that they are pretty bulletproof and should last a very long time with regular fluid, filter service.
Unless you are having other problems (slippage) or front seal leaks don't drop the transmission.
I suggest you find another mechanic that has more experience with Mercedes.

Vin

Hmmmmmm...leaking tranny on passenger side? Doesn't that sound familiar folks? My leak turned out to be the dipstick/filler tube O-ring. Take a good look and make sure you know where the leak is coming from to prevent otherwise unnecessary costly repairs. Good luck.

Most properly maintained MB automatics easily go 150K-miles. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Many leaks can be fixed without removing the transmission. I agree with the above posts. You should have the source of the leak properly determined.

Transmission fluid leak

My 1990 300e had a similar problem which turned out to be the a bad O-ring. I don't think you need to drop the tranny, try replacing the 0-ring first.

Richard

Cost of O-ring...$0.25! No need to drop the transmission. Cost to replace seals...@$800! I hope you don't need to do the latter. That is why you need to determine location of leak.
