190E Auto -> Manual Conversion: Neutral Switch
I just finished a manual transmission conversion on my 1993 2.6 190E and had a question about neutral safety switch.
the automatic neutral safety switch was on the transmission as 3 wires, purple, purple striped white, and brown. to get my car to start, i soldered all 3 together. what this does is actually make my car in neutral mode the entire time, so I'm running into problems with cruise control and maybe ABS? how do I properly wire this to my clutch pedal? the switch on the clutch pedal gives me continuity when the pedal is up, and continuity is broken when clutch is pressed, which is not what I want. I need the switch to be on when the clutch is pressed, and off when clutch is out. thanks in advanced. |

John,
You've probably already seen this but: It looks like you'd want to connect up a switch to the clutch pedal and wire it in line to replace the starter lockup unit so that when you'd push down the clutch pedal you'd be able to start the car...it would essentially think it was in neutral or park as if it were an autobox. It might also take care of your abs/cruise control issue. The circuit would only be complete (as that diagram depicts) only when the clutch is applied. just a thought.

Why not just wire the switch to a rocker on the dash? Because you dont want it to happen while youre shifting either. Your way or the switch way shouldnt effect ABS or cruise when your done. Your car just may freak out all the time in motion tho when it sees park/neutral at 35 mph.

yeah I soldered a switch in place instead of soldering all the wires together and turned it off after starting the car and it made no difference. at least now I have a starter kill switch I can hide.
why would this conversion hurt my cruise control functionality? my cruise control was working perfectly before this. the only thing I can think of is that the wires for the brake pedal switch is wrong. |

I love to see more pictures of this swap. I shall be attempting it soon with an 85 190E 2.3 trans and my 190D turbo.

My former 190D2.5 5 spd. did not have a neutral safety switch. The switch on the brake pedal was to interupt the cruise control. Found the same situation when I put 5 spd into the 300E. Some of the wires that formerly went to the NSS were capped, others were extended to the new reverse light switch on the shifter.
