w123 door handle removal dilemma

I usually keep pretty much to the Diesel forum, but this is a general question about my W123 (300d). I recently tried to unlock the drivers side door using the ignition key (they are different because of an ignition lock replacement). Now the tumbler in the door lock will not turn. I've tried taking the door handle out to examine the issue, but from what I've read in other threads on this subject it seems that you need to use the key to disengage the lock rod from the inner door. As I stated above I can't turn the door lock. How do I get this handle out without using the key and without damaging anything?
