Exclamation Seized Caliper

Hello All,

The right rear caliper has seized and is grinding on my rotor. I want to fix it myself. My mechanic wants way to much to do it and funds are just to tight right now. The car is a 1980 (W116) 300SD Turbo diesel. Has anyone run into this issue and fixed it themselves in here? Is there a way to just disconnect that break? HELP!!!!

Do a search. It could be the brake line.

Don't try to disconnect just that brake. The car would be horribly unbalanced and unsafe for even light braking.

Not sure what you mean by disconnecting that "brake". If you mean remove the caliper to replace, then yes. Two bolts hold the caliper on plus the brake line. Check around, you can buy a rebuilt caliber for about $40 bucks plus your core.

Is replacing a caliper a DIY job?

Yes, but replace the brake hoses as well since they are old. Also, calipers should be replaced in pairs (both fronts or both backs).

I would bet it's not locked

you have to do this yourself....I just did my 1990 300TE front brakes, which were down to backing plates for $21 out the door from AutoZone....the pistons DID retract and the rotors did NOT require anything...brakes are the biggest bag of profit for a car repair shop that there is...no question.....sort of like Coca-Cola at McDonalds, they LOVE to sell you soda at $1 that costs them 6 cents, pure profit.....

Brakes

You will never get out of a car repair shop for a brake repair job for less than $300.....won't happen

A very simple job, but you gotta do some homework first. Buy a book, even if it's just the Chiltons manual. Better yet, get a copy of the MB repair CD. Personally, I don't understand how anybody could own a 30 year car and not know how to do brakes.

Yes...Brakes...

I don't care about brakes anymore....swear to God, ALL brakes (disk or drum) work the same way and it doesn't matter if its' a Fiat or a Chevy or a BMW or Yugo...I don't care...braking systems all work the same way...It's what they call, hydrolic or something like that there....

Ignore 'Cliffmac' once again. Do not purchase cheap aftermarket rotors or pads. They will squeak and rumble from day one. Stick with OE or reputable German brands. Period.
