CLK320 left side turn signal constantly on

2001 CLK320

The left turn signal is on all the time with the signal switch in the left and neutral positions. Turning the switch to the right position works properly and makes the right side signals blink, and stops the left side blinking.

I disconnected and reconnected the battery - it made no difference.

I had a quick look for relays and could find only one in the trunk, north east of the spare wheel.

The stalk switch is solid and has no looseness or sloppiness.

What could cause this problem?

Where are the relays in this car, and where is the flasher unit?

In case the problem is the stalk switch, is disconnecting the battery enough to stop the air bag popping in may face before removing the steering wheel?

Please help. The car is undriveable in this condition unless I remove front and rear bulbs and duct tape the light on the door mirror.

Thanks

I did a little digging and lo and behold the problem is the stalk switch. The blinking stops if I tap at the base of the stalk a certain way.

It doesn't seem like a Mercedes turn signal switch should be so poorly made to break in only 107,000 miles, but there it is.

So now the problem is removing the air bag and steering wheel. I am not a novice but I have never removed an air bag equipped steering wheel. Any pointers in this direction will be much appreciated. I have the factory workshop manual on CD but I prefer real life experiences shared by experts on this forum.

The air bag is of little concern. Start by disconnecting the battery.

For removal you need a T30 torx bit about 2" long.
After removal make sure bag is placed so that the star is pointing UP.

Making sure that the steering wheel is straight & locked is the most important thing!

Mr M.B.DOC does disconnecting the black molex connector on the airbag module need a special tool? This is the 3-wire harness that works the + - switches etc on the streering wheel.

I am stumpted by this little connector. it moves about 1mm but something is stopping it from coming out.

Thanks
