Transmission removal from seized engine

I need to separate the transmission from a seized engine. What is the best way to disengage the torque converter from the flex plate - since I will not be able to rotate the engine to get to the six bolts out?

Thanks.

Just did this with a 380 SL 116 motor.

With transmission removed..I did this with engine on the floor....you can get a wrench between the flex plate and engine.

Takes a little finesse but doable.

Thanks.

One more question. When separating the engine and transmission, will the transmission just slide out and leave the torque converter on the crankshaft?

Yes. The torque converter is not locked to the transmission, only bolted to the flex plate and slip splined to the input shaft of the transmission..

Unless you where able to drain the t/c be prepared for a few quarts of AFT draining out as you separate them.

As you pull the automatic away from the engine you will leave the t/c connected to the flex plate.

If your doing this on the floor, moving the trans' a inch away from the engine will allow you to reach the flex plate bolts....this way you won't spill any ATF.
