Blowby oil or turbo
I have a small amount of oil that shows up in the intake manifold, enough to seep from around the EGR. Is this just blowby oil or is it comming from the turbo?
It is the 300sd I am talking about. Any thoughts. Any way to tell for sure? Thanks

I expect that it is blowby. The best way to tell would be to do a leakdown test and listen through the oil filler hole for escaping air. If there is blowby the air will pass the rings and be heard through this hole.

How much oil is 'normal' for an engine with 100k on the clock? Any VW diesel I have experience with has a lot of blowby even when new and the intake is always damp with oil. I am guessing MB's are the same. thanks

I'm trying to think of a way to describe this to you. The only thing I can come up with is that if it is so wet with oil that it soaks the air filter, you have a problem. If not, you can probably just keep it wiped down as long as it doesn't use lots of oil.
100K miles is generally considered low mileage on these engines, however, it depends largely on how it has been driven and maintained. It would be possible for one of these engines to be completely worn out at this mileage if the oil has not been frequently changed, the car was driven on short hops and/or it was driven very hard. Good luck, |

This was a long haul car with regular service. Oil consumption is about 1/2 litre per 3000 miles. There is only a little oil that collects in the airfilter housing and very little that gets to the wastegate. I was just wondering if what I have is normal.

I wouldn't worry about except enough to keep the air filter housing wiped clean. It sounds like doing this at every oil change would probably keep it clean enough. Now, about that oil change interval....

Is it leaking out from where that "elbow" rubber piece attaches to the cam cover? If that is where it is coming from then you can replace that rubber part and most times stop the leakage.

Larry;
Oil change interval is 3000mile max and I DO IT HOT. Thanks for the advice.
