1987 420sel rear suspention

Hi all,

First time 1987 420 sel owner, members on this site seem VERY helpfull. Moving on, I've already done some small fixes with guidence from this site. Now, my driver side rear suspention seems to be a bit lower than the passenger side. I can place my hand in a vertical position between the tire and wheel well on the passenger side but it does not fit the same on the driver side (lower). I have not had a chance to put her up on jacks/ramps/etc. to see if a bushing is gone or some other problem. Is this common with this model? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance...

Truly,

JD

The coil springs, front and rear seem to loose their stiffness on MB's over the years. 100k seems to be the norm. Not sure why. Cheap steel or the way its manufactured or something. Hard to beleive from the Germans. Have, and had a lot of 60 year old American cars with original coils and are still good. Funny thing is they don't go south at the same time. Replaced mine on a '91 420 SEL at about 126k. Huge differerece. Had a pronounced squat on the passengers side in the rear. Since I have a full shop and a lift I swapped them left to right and the sag followed. Just couldn't believe a coil would go bad but they do. If only Detroit would make the rest of their car like their coils. Best car I've ever wrenched on.

Good luck.

Hey,

Thanks for the info... I got this 87 420sel with 91K on it, so I bet you are right. I have changed these coil spings in MUCH MUCH smaller cars like a 4cyl Triumph and MGs. What kind of part cost am I looking at here? Is this an intense job?

Thanks,

JD

If you don't mind that they lower the car a little, I've heard others here talk about the H&R spring kit from Tire Rack. Here
Looks like they run $272 for a set of springs, plus whatever rubber parts you want to replace while you're in there. I'd say at least the spring perch shim/donut on each, while you have them apart.

I have a set for my SEC, but haven't gotten around to installing them yet, as my SD decided that it was attention deprived and needed to be paid attention before the SEC got any more.
