what w124 evaporator to buy?

Just curious, considering that most W124 are now over 15 year old and surely many have A/C failing or about to fail. What evaporator corse are smart folks buying to replace the leaking one in thei W124 ? Mine has leaked since forever and I have said I will replace it but here we are 2010 summer and the car still has no AC.

There is a guy on ebay (rojoimparts) who is selling a core made of aluminum with expansion valve attached. Has anyone ever bought anything from him? Did it fail within a year?

Come to think of it, when replacing the evaporator you have to get the best even if it cost several hundred bucks more, since the amount of work involved is just staggering.

In fact while you are at it, might as well suck it up and buy a new heater core and pods and do them all at once. Right?

^ Absolutely no doubt about it. I was going to skip the pods and heater core, but with everything out, I changed my mind real fast.

I went with Reinz and everything is running perfect now for the past 3-4 weeks. I have not heard of any bad evaporators after the original one has been replaced...so stick with ACM or Reinz. I wouldn't get any other brands.

Use a "Behr" OE evaporator & always replace the center vent diaphram INSIDE the a/c box!

How about buying an ACM clone? According to this ebay vendor here, he evaporator is made by a "sister" company of ACM. Hmmm...

I purchased one from him for my 124. It was all aluminum, included an OE expansion valve and appeared to be well made. I wouldn't doubt that it is made by ACM subsidiary. I installed it 2+ years ago and all is well. The pictures of the Behr evaporator that I have seen show combined aluminum/copper construction like the original so I personally would stay away from those. Mark

This is not the sort of item you want to save $50 on. Stick with Reinz or ACM and be done with it. You want this to outlast the car, not a few years. It seems silly to me to be concerned with $50 when you are talking about a 12hr+ job and well over $500 if the pods are replaced. I've done it...trust me. You don't want to do this again, ever. Do it right the first time and never worry about it again.
