Ok its now official. The wiring harness has not been replaced and it is bad.
Of course we have been suspicious all along but we simply could not find it. All others were also suspicious and with the lack of tag to prove it we kept going back to that but we simply could not demonstrate it nor find it. Now... the main reason this stumped both I and my indy is that we keep going to the places on the back of the engine where it gets hot and often starts or is worst, and in fact we went multiple times to almost every plug and pealed the covers of those back a good bit and we kept finding real nice looking insulation. We kept suspecting it but the codes kept saying "coil this or that" and we would replace those that the codes indicated and it would fix it for a time. In fact we would find mostly NEW looking insulation when looking. But... it appears this one was perhaps better than most of them and somehow it lasted longer for some reason. It has always been a Southern car but I cannot fathom why it is in such great condition in most places if its an older type... but it is. Let this be a lesson to us all (at least those that cannot be sure) that it can be near impossible to tell. It only seems bad in one area we finally found today. In the big bundle and in one area. When the coil we just replaced last week was now showing bad again (codes) we got on the horn with some of his buddies in Atlanta and with some advice there we got to digging in deep into the main portions of the harness and real aggressively got the wrap off and we found it. So off goes the old and in comes the new. I am relieved we finally found it and could prove it out. We were almost ready to change it anyway but at a cost of $1080 for the harness I simply felt a day of digging was in order. And now I am much encouraged. We will put a new one on this week.
