300ce overheating problem

Someone locally is selling a 300ce that has piqued my interest... however they say it has an overheating problem. In the description they say the following:

"new radiator put in it, a new fan clutch motor, all new hoses and they even took out the thermostat!!"

What in the heck else could it be. I would like to go see the car, but this seems puzzling.. of course I would have to determine if it has blown a headgasket.

Even if the aux fans are not working, it still should not overheat.

he says his mechanic can't figure it out.

is there a way i can tell if the headgasket is bad?

i am not a noob...but I am going to check this car out...

i thought about something as simple as the pressure cap...

i'll look for any leaks to signify a water pump.....

Wink Overheating 300CE

As with any car that has a fan clutch, if that item is not working at its full capacity -- the car will tend to overheat when running.

Lee, it's possible that some of the cooling passages in the head are partially blocked. You may want to consider having a MB-trained tech perfom a PPI (pre-purchase inspection).

take your thermostat out and boil some water on the stove. set your thermo in the whater and see if it opens. if not a new one is arounf 18 bucks. youll need a 10 mm socket.

the owner of this car had the thermostat taken out..so it does not have one now..

some say that could be a contributing factor

you cannot remove the thermostat as it will allow a portion of the coolant to short circuit around the pump.symptom---the faster you drive the hotter it gets.if this car has an o/heating problem you need to make sure that all the fans are operating correctly and that the aux fan shroud is not hiding two tons of dirt in the area that you cannot see.
