need help with trunk lighting issue
I have a 2001 430 CLK conv. The trunk lights are not working. I just bought car. Its appears that the lighting fixtures and harnesses are all installed properly. The only light that is working is the night-driving light on left side of trunk door. Both turning signal lights do not work, and the right night-driving light does not work either.
I already looked the fuses and made sure I was putting correct light bulbs in sockets (new ones). Can someone please advise me on what to do next?? |

Very confusing question, if we can get this cleared up you might get more answers.
To me a trunk light is the light that illuminates the interior of the trunk when you open it. I assume by "night-driving light" you are referring to what is universally called a tail light. SO, assuming this is correct, you are saying that the tail light are all inoperative except the one that is on the right, the one in the trunk lid, not the one on the body. No other tail lights work. Which makes me think that the one that is working might be the rear fog light, since that one mounts to the trunk on the left. Be sure to check this out. And you say the rear turn signals are inoperative, are the turn signals working on the front? What failure messages are you getting when you try operating these lights? You should get a series of failure messages in the instrument cluster. Gilly

thanks Gilly,
you are correct to correct me...yes, it is the tail lights on the outside of the trunk. there are two bulbs on each side. The upper lights are for the reverse bright light (white) and the bottom is for fog lights (red). I managed to get the white reverse lights to work and the left fog light, but the rightside fog light is not working with same bulb that works on left side. Not sure how to proceed. The car is giving me a warning message "LAMP DEFECTIVE" "check lamps". ALSO, the convertible top will not go down. This just started today. Could this be related?? |

I don't believe the right side has a foglight. Someone may have added a socket or something, but typically on a US car there is no wiring for the right side fog light. So if I am furhter understanding, there is only a perceived problem with the rear fogs, but no tail light problem?
The defective lamp could be elsewhere, you need to go around and make an inventory of what isn't working, it could be anywhere. ALTHOUGH I thought you mentioned the turn signals aren't working? You need to check everything, like all the brake lights, the side markers, license plate lights, they are all monitored. Then worry about the top not working, one at a time please! I doubt the problems are related. Gilly
