Best Models to Buy Used: E, S-Klasse
In the past 5 to 10 years, are any of the S-Klasse cars managable for the hobbyist, or even for an owner with professional help but somewhat limited means? Are the E-Klasse cars pretty much over their problems and better cars now? I have a W126 ('86 420SEl) and might run across a newer model "at the right price", if you know what I mean...

Among other things of concern, avoid any model with the newer M272-273 engines (mostly 06 and 07 MY) unless the balancer shaft gear issue has been resolved--and it's not a recall, unfortunately. More info and pics at this link: Are you OBSESSED about your Benz? | Attn! Owners '06-'07 MB's with M272 or M273 engines
It will help if you post the various chassis/years/models you're considering. The 210 generation of E class is very DIY, the 211 also, with added complexity (and the same engine concern for the years in question above). E and S both are okay to work on for the basics (brakes, plugs, filters, etc.), but when the computerized electronics go south it gets very deep very quickly. IMHO here's the story as regards the S-class: If you can't afford to buy a new one you can't afford to own one ever.
The S-class is Mercedes "leading edge" car and as such requires LOTS of TLC from dealers. Make that expensive TLC. The E-class, however, is the taxicab of Germany and a lot more practical bet. Most S-class owners who are past warranty are probably just treating their cars as "run-til-it fails," (i.e. like a Camry) and if an S-class has been in that state for long you don't want it.

Thanks for the rational assessments; you make sensible arguments. I will follow my fears and stay
clear of the S-Class, Siren song not withstanding. A clean, solid E-class it will be, if and when... |
