Fan Clutch M103 W124 300E

Hello,

I have read and read butt I am not clear on how to diagnose faulty fan clutch.

Car is 1986 300E about 260k miles. Car gets hot at rest, fine moving -- temp comes down as soon as car is moving above 30mph.

I have a 1992 wagon with no cooling problems to compare (different fan and clutch I think.)

1) This morning with both cars cold the 1992 fan was stiff -- no free spin. The 1986 was stiff but had 1/2-2 rotations of free spin.
2) Started cars and both seemed the same.
3) After running 30-60 seconds both had free spin when shut off -- the 1992 free spin longer
4) Same after sitting about 2 minutes -- same as before cars were started.

The 1986 was slightly less stiff dead cold -- is this anything that can lead to a conclusion?

Further info -- radiator is cracked and will need to be replaced. So I may do clutch at the same time.

Thanks

thanks.

I am leaning towards the radiator being the issue, your description of the fan sounds fairly normal.
I have a good radiator from a 90 300E if you are interested. $80 shipped via fed ex ground.

If you want the clutch fan and radiator hoses as well, $135 shipped.

I am VERY interested but want to make sure the parts are correct. What is the MB PN on your radiator? And this is used, correct? Can you tell me how old/how many miles on the parts -- etc.? Thanks!

Do not forget, the '90+ cars received an updated fan blade for the M103s. I wish we could use the 603 Diesel style but the blades are the wrong direction.

Furthermore, M103s appear to 'run hot' compared to other MBs of this vintage due to the 87°C thermostat installed in them. Swap in a 79°C and the fan clutch will not fully engage nearly as often... did this a few years ago in my 300SEL and cannot be happier I did so.

Swap in the red aux fan switch on your '86 also.

my 86' runs cool... yes the radiator was replaced in 04', and a fan clutch update this past year. I also went with the replacement( M104) fan shroud as it is 2-pieces which can be removed without pulling the clutch. Makes life easier.
Runs cool with the 87F t-stat.

Also depends on your climate. 87°C is irritating in the southern US.
