CPO question on purchase

I did a search and was surprised not to find much on the subject here.

I am entertaining purchasing a 2007-2008 E350 CPO from the local MB dealer. I asked for the details on the cpo, he showed me this pamphlet, but I couldn't take it with me.

Can I just relax having a CPO used MB? Or are there fine print that they won't cover? I asked if it covered electrical and he said yes. Is it as good as BMW's used car cpo program? Or should I still purchase an extended warranty?

thanks

yosshimura, MB dealers are supposed to follow a detailed checklist before giving any vehicle a CPO designation. Whether that actually happens, or not, depends on the dealer's integrity.

A 2008 automobile may still be under the factory warranty, depending on the mileage. As for an extended warranty, find out whether it is a MB warranty or an aftermarket one. As I recall MB has drastically reduced what components are covered under their own warranties. When I bought our CPO 1992 300CE from our local MB dealer I purchased a comprehensive Starmark Warranty for 2 years/100,000 miles that even covered gaskets, but I don't think that type warranty is still available. Probably because MB was losing money on those warranties, and warranties are intended to make additional profit.

One school of thought regarding warranties is to set aside that amount of money in a "maintenance fund" rather than pay for an extended warranty. Suggest that you research the reliability of the year/model automobile that you're leaning towards. Also, have the dealer give you a printout of the maintenance history for any automobile you're considering and check for repetitive problems or frequent repairs for various reasons. Good luck.

Whatever you decide I would keep your 1995 E320. I own one and they are wonderful automobiles. Of course, I am a DIY'er and it's an automobile that is simple enough to work on yourself.

Once any car is OUT of the original "umbrella" warranty, many items are NOT covered.

BUT 98% of the costly items are covered. The audio system is one large exception in most policies.
