Looking in from the grill with the hood open the oil filter is located at the rear of the engine near the firewall on the driver's side of the engine. It is a cartridge style oil filter.

hey,
i think the oil filter cap should be on the driver's side of the engine bay between the black plastic intake manifold and the firewall, look for a black plastic cap. i only use engine oils that have the MB spec. 229.1 or 229.3. as far viscosity goes ... that depends on the weather conditions in which the vehicle will be operating. check your owners manual, there is a scale in there . i run synthetic mobil1 5w-40 . as far as how much oil. i forgot but i do know that its either 6 or 7 quarts. i personally drain at the plug, after taking the car for a spin, to ensure that the old oil is nice and warm/hot. as for the fuel filter, the Haynes manual says to replace it every 36,000 miles DIY W124 Gasoline Fuel Filter R & R enjoy the new ride. |

rosenfe, fuel filter should be replaced every 60,000 miles. Considering you live in CA I would use Mobil 1 15W50 in a 1995 E320 engine ... per the Owner's Manual the capacity is 7.9 quarts. Best to add 7 quarts, then add oil so the level is midway between the dipstick low and high marks. A suction device is the easiest way to remove used oil (MB dealers suck out used oil) because there is no need to get under the car, but many folks prefer to drain the oil.
The oil filter is a cartridge type that fits inside the black cap (mentioned in other posts).

hey ferdman,
i had a question regarding oil pan capacity. i went to check my records, and found that at my last oil change i poured in about 6.4L of oil, which is a little less than full on the dipstick. on the other hand, my owners manual claims that the oil capacity is 7.9 US qt (7.5L). i'm not 100% sure, but i believe that i came across some info claiming that the oil pan capacities were reduced by MB. if this is true, do you happen to know by how much were the oil capacities reduced by? and what vehicles does the oil pan capacity reduction apply to? and what model years? my guess is that MB reduced the oil pan capacity on my benz by a whole liter. thanks tim |

Tim, I'm unfamiliar with reduced oil pan capacities. With our MB automobiles I rely on the Owner's Manual information as gospel. Since MB is both conscientious and thorough I would expect them to ensure the Owner's Manual information is accurate, or annotate it accordingly ... at least on their 1995 and older vehicles.

Autozone has a tool to remove the oil filter housing cover.. $7, forgot which one but take one to your car and check. A lot cheaper than the Mercedes version
