Help with my "5 Cyl" M104!!
OK...so here is what is happening...
1995 E320 Sedan...136k...Full MB Service history...purchased by me a few months ago. Car had been sitting for almost a year while PO was abroad. Latest Service included Oil/Filter, ATF Trans Fluid and filter, Air Filter and Serp Belt. Car has been running fine until every now and then, as i am driving, it would "Hesitate" and feel under powered like it was running on 4 or 5 cyl's. Then after the hiccup that would last a few seconds, everything would be back to normal. Then the same thing would start happening for one or two minutes and the go back to normal. Now it will happen on a cold start, go for 5 minutes like that and then go back to normal. No CEL Does not stall or die, while driving or at a stop. Easy cold or Hot starts. When the problem is happening, it still feels the same whether it is in gear or in P or N. No record of Engine wiring harness change. Any ideas? |

have you built that $10 led code reader that you plug in by the battery? Your car maybe throwing trouble codes not triggering the CEL

Change your spark plugs, distributor and rotor. Then let us know if it still has the miss.

Taking the car on a trip and doing an Italian tuneup gets her running fine, but when it's back to the day to day slog, the plugs load up again. The wiring harness is definitely suspect on your car as well. The leads to the 3 coils are one of the first manifestations of harness failure. Since there are only three coils, I would expect two cylinders to drop out if the wire is failing intermittently. I've replaced the harness on our wagon, and still get the plug failure on occasion, so use is still a problem. I'm OK with that, I'd rather my wife be very careful with and protective of her car than the other extreme... Try the plugs first, they are cheap. Oh, by the way, you can look for days, and you will not find a distributor on this engine. ![]() Jim

Ooops on the distributor and rotor, I haven't ventured this late in the mercs yet.
But did have a similar misfire on an earlier m104 and it was the plugs, dist. and rotor. Sorry for the confusion. |
