Hello everyone,
I've been breaking my back all day taking apart the 300SE for a heater core swap. I've gotten the dash out, the steering wheel off, and I have even opened the top of the heater box and can see the heater core. How in the hell do I swap that core? It looks like I have to take the whole heater box out. If so, how does one do that? All the write-ups I've seen leave off at this point. Do I have to discharge the A/C system and pull the evap too? I'm stuck and need help. Thanks!

Search for evaporator replacement. Same steps.
Swine of a job. BTDT on my 560SEL. By the time you get to the core, all that remains below the windshield is the firewall, and some wiring..... And if you do do the heater core, invest in a new evap and vacuum actuators... Took me 3 weekends with some heavy duty time put in. Lost track of the amount of alcohol involved... ![]() Jim

Sacre Bleu! That is what I was afraid of. Guess I might as well order a new evap, since I'm in there anyways.
Sheesh, if I'd known it was that hard, I'd have just blocked off the heater core. Thanks.

Just as already said. Separating the plastic housing is the easy part

Thanks for the help everyone. This was definitely a project that took a great deal of patience and persistence to get a good result. I learned a lot from it and I think I did as good a job as possible. I've never completely torn the dash of a vehicle apart before, and it sure was a challenge. My hands got pretty cut up, especially during re-assembly; it sort of looks like I was fighting a cat.
I made some noteworthy improvements to the heater box while I was at it. For starters, all of the old foam seals were painstakingly removed and replaced with new seals. I used billiard felt for some of the flaps with excellent results. I glued it on using contact cement, again with excellent results. I used foam weatherstripping tape for some of the seals inside, and in one spot I used a different cloth type material. All of the foam seals that seal the sections of the heater box together were also shot, and they were re-done with caulk. All of the ducts were cleaned, a new heater core and evap were fitted, and off we go. The Nissens brand heater core had a notable difference, if you plan to use one you should check out my YouTube video of the heater box. You can also check out how awesome billiard felt is for the ducts and get a good view of the AC recycler flap working. Cheers! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRP892ytqXg

Great vid. That will sure help out when I tackle this project. I hope I never have to, but the very, very faint smell of coolant tells me it will be a summer project coming up. Luckily I have all the stuff to do the AC work on hand.
