Ignition lock broken 190E Help needed!

Hey new here...
I have an 1990 Mercedes 190E sportline. I have got the common problem with the lock jamming, key wont turn at all to the NR 1 position..
Its really frustrating. I know a guy who used to be a mercedes mechanic. He told me the only way is too keep turning the key and eventually it would move.. Coult take hours though.
Ive been sitting about 5 hours now and nothing happens!
What im wondering is if some smart person in here has any tip of any kind!
Anything that can help cause its my first car and all that and all i see is it standing still
Im also wondering IF i can get the key to turn and pop out the lock cylinder, will the problem be solved if I just switch the lock cylinder? Or do I have to switch the entire lock?

Thanks heaps for any help!

Answer

Are you reliving the steering wheel torque while trying to turn the key?

keep trying, it will eventually move.

To fix the problem without buying anything new.

1) remove ignition switch assembly.
2) prevent the steering lock from ever locking the wheel again.
3) reinstall lock

what I have seen is that the key jams only after the steering lock mechanism locks the steering wheel (which is when you remove the key)

of course a simpler fix is to simply not remove the key

mespe: Sounds really good if i could prevent the the steering wheel lock from ever locking again! What is the easiest way to do that?

The key can easily be pulled out of the lock by the way..

My son and I had the same prob, and we drilled out the lock...
Search or contact ps2cho and he has a thread on it..

you will need to remove the ignition switch assembly. The first time I did it, I simple squeezed the end, so that the locking tongue couldn't move out at all. If you want to do it "nicer" maybe drill and screw would work.

Apparently the first thing that happens when you turn the key, is the steering wheel unlocks, so I would try continually turning the steering wheel in alternate directions while trying to turn the key. Eventually it will turn, hopefully. Also maybe in/out, or try moving the ignition assembly while turning the key.

Not my car, just a file photo...but thanks anyway. My '93 is a one owner and garage kept, so no comparison to this one.

Well I have been working all day now and jiggling the key but no
So I got a bit frustrated and took a screwdriver and tried to turn it around, well I managed to get the outer bearing, you know the space metal thing to move. Not the barrel itself but just the outer metal bit. I can turn that bit NR1 but not the lock itself.

Now I am able to stick the special tool down the 2 holes all the way down! But the barrel still wonŽt pop up

Is this any help or must I still be able to turn the whole lock to poition 1?

I will put in some pictures tomorrow so you will know what I am talking about!
