1984 190D automatic trans crossed with 1988 190E trans?????

I would like an expert opinion regarding the use of an 84 190 diesel trans torque converter in an 88 190E trans body. I will have to use the diesel flywheel or flex plate, my observations and measurements show this combination will match up fine. My main question and concern is that the diesel torque conv. is physically smaller in dia and no doubt fluid capacity vs the gas conv. Also I realize the gas engine will generate higher rpms much quicker than the diesel. What performance results can I expect with this combination????

I did this once with a Ford 351 Windsor and a C4 trans in a '74 Bronco on 44 inch tires, good result, off the line response was better and better MPG. But there is almost a 250 horsepower gap between that and your car and some more pounds in weight. I don't think this will give you enough change to spend all that work on it and you will lose some of the more fun characteristics from the original transmission. In the year 1988 after mimicking Americans for 30+ years Mercedes was getting the hang of making automatic transmissions though that skill has somewhat faded since production began on the 722,6 transmission.

I believe you will have issues with the ignition timing as the sensor is part of the flywheel, which is specific to the engine.

u need to deal with shift point issues.
Diesel is slow revving, if u rev it fast u could have another set of issues.
U mind as well find a right one, so no need to pull it out 6 mths later.

dsl converter are beefier than benzenes. Dsl has lots more torque.
