Camshaft position sensor, 103 engine

This is NOT about the crankshaft position sensor that originates at the bell housing

The other day, copper shavings were being produced underneath the part that sits TDC on the engine..... now the engine is idling rough.

I just replaced my fan bearing bracket....as it was going.... i think the bad bracket...might have had an effect on this part.

What specifically does the camshaft position sensor do... or is it called the crankshaft position sensor for the front of the engine?

That sensor has Nothing to do with the running or operation of the engine systems.

MB installed that sensor as a reference for the "factory" scope that we used back in the day.

That sensor is used for the cluster only. It has no influence in the ECU or KE-Jetronic system.

YOU do NOT need to replace that TDC sensor on the front of the damper!

Take it off & throw it away. It does nothing!

He did not literally mean take it off.....Leave it alone.

Your rough idle has nothing to do with the water pump. If the pump bearing is noisy, replace it, but that's it.

Rough idle is spark or fuel.

Can't track down a vacuum problem....maybe i should re-phrase.... perhaps the idle is just fine.... but the engine is just vibrating more than it should..... idle doesn't fluctuate.

starts right up.....

motor mount have been replaced...

...and like i said...with the belt off, all seems pretty decent

a pulley must be out of synch with the rest try and look for a wobbling pulley with the belt on or remove the belt and rotate pulleys by hand to feel for binding, most likely it's one you were working on

Mine is doing the same thing...I noticed it is the waterpump pulley as the bearing seems to be going out. It has about 1.5 mm play in it and prior to that, the engine did not make a rattling sound. Got one coming tomorrow but it is a workout to change.

Lee, it's best to use a reconditioned water pump from your local MB dealer rather than an aftermarket water pump.
