c320 central dash access to fix tapping

My wife's (high priority) c320 has a broken flap somewhere behind the center dash vents and infront of the big triangular perferated top dash vent. It sounds like a plastic flap on a motor shaft, tapping away on a 2x4. Question: how do I get into the dash? go in through the metal vent? Or through the plastic vents? Through the center wood panel?

Thanks Guys.

About 95% of the time...that type of clicking noise is from the footwell flap linkage & motors.

Not an easy DIYer repair as the console & dash must be completely removed.
Takes a good MB tech 5-6 hrs.
