A/C Belt

the A/C on my Benz is inoperable and I have no plan to fix it. I am in the process of replacing the belts and am considering leaving the A/C with no belt at all. Is this OK or will it cause other damage. I once had a 1978 Plymouth Volare (what a car!) where the A/C compressor froze up and the belt caught on fire.
