M103 Head Replacement Success FYI's
It is done! Started at 7am. Finished at 6:30 pm. Took 11.5 Hours to take out the head, sand it down, put whatever new parts in I could with head off, and put back together. The ICV hoses were a #!&% even with the head off!
We did get the head off in 2.5 hours (huge help to have an air compressor wratchet on the outtake manifolds!). Took me 2.5 more hours to hand sand off the old gasket material...ughh. The coolant passages were pretty much clogged up and sealed from calcium deposits. Don't know how it stayed cool before at all when looking at the condition of those holes. Oil leak was definitely coming out of the back left and you could see where the gasket broke down and failed. Number 3 cylinder had lots of coolant corrosion and leakage. Amazing what you can see when the head is off. Also, when doing the Timing chain Cover Gasket, make sure to take out the old cam seal and reinstall cover first without it. You won't have an issue rolling the u-shaped gasket as you can put on the cover pushing almost straight down and then forward. Install your bottom bolts then top bolts and bracket, then tap your new seal over the camshaft! Much easier than the first three times I did it wrong! Started it back up and no more oil leak or burning oil smell! Awesome!!! I did have some white smoke for a while coming out of tailpipe then it cleared up (must have been from old coolant in the pipes). Need any info, let me know. Thanks to ps2cho for the socket, washer, bolt tip to get out the chain guide rail pin. Came right out nice and easy. No need to use a slide hammer! Be careful with those rail guides! I broke the top of the right side and the snap connector off the middle right side reinstalling the head (used a small zip tie to fix it...no problem but WHEW!!!). Car is now almost starting before I turn the key !!! sptt |
