Smile Auto Tranny 722600 how long is the dip stick

My 1996 E230 auto (722600) has a leaking rear seal. will be fixed soon.
I have obtained a MB flexible E230 dip stick. but its quite long , so I have placed a marker at 34 inches, so I can get consistant readings.(what is the correct length, do i have too much atf in the tranny ??

Just out of curiosity. Did you push the stick in there till it bottoms out? Are there temp markings on it?

Auto Dip Stick

Thanks Jim, Yes Have tested a number of times, I believe that it touches the bottom, if i am not careful i believe te flexible stick bends and goes across the base of the pan, which shows too much fluid. At 34 inches the stick indicates a full Auto, ( have just had it serviced at my local shop they put castrol dexron 111 in it , the auto is operating very well except for the rear seal leak) there are no marks on the stick

It doesn't sound like our dipsticks are alike.

Are you checking it with the car in park idling after having been driven for at least 20 minutes?

Auto dip stick length

Yes Jim , do all that ,, run it up to temp, or after a long run, keep the engine idling while testing the fluid content,
so i suppose its OK.
When they replace the rear seal (again) next tuesday, I will check again, regards john

Temp marks , at the bottom of stick there two markers , i was told the lower one is when tranny is cool/cold, the upper one is when at operating temperature, I have been checking at operating temp

Are you seeing any indications of level when you check it?

There should be marks on the black plastic end of the stick.
The stick is considered a "tool", not a part that stays in the dipstick tube while driving like on previous transmissions.
It is quite long as it is used for vehicles with longer tubes, let me guess that possibly the .6 was used in the Sprinter for example, which might have a longer tube so this shop tool would be able to reach the bottom of that tube as well.
The stick should bottom out at the pan, I've never heard of one going down and sliding across the inside of the pan. The fluid level should be somewhere on the plastic, if it slid I would say the fluid would be on the flexible portion of the stick.

E230 Auto dip stick length

Thanks for the info , yes it is a shop tool, not a permant fitted stick like my older mercs, has the black plastic end with the temp marks , so I will push it as far as it will go (hitting the bottom of the pan) its probably over full, will quizz the mechanic tomorrow when he replaces the rear seal,
regards john,

Overfilling is a really bad situation for 722.6xx transmissions. If that's the case I would suggest draining a little out and readjusting level to 80C mark.

Good luck.

Right, it'll show over full if the temp of the fluid is too high. So it could be OK, unless you know the fluid temp you just really are blind to the truth.

As far as the fluid level, MB says they want the fluid to the top mark. Not overfilled, just to the max line. Lower levels can lead to bubbles in the fluid and poor shift quality.
