Compress a motor mount?

Can i compress a motor mount for a W124 before installation to make it fit a bit easier?
Would a vise work?

I would think that's probably a bad idea to try. First the mounting surfaces are generally not parallel. Second, over compression may lead to bladder damage and shortened life.

The normal procedure for installation is to remove the mounting bolts and use a thick piece of wood between a floor jack and the oil pan. (Assuming you don't have an overhead trolley and chain hoist ). You may also need to release the radiator shroud if you have one to clear fan blades. Gently raise the engine until there is enough clearance to remove the old mount. You may have to raise the engine a little more to get the new one in.

No. Just raise the engine in small increments until you can get it in.

Watch the strain you put on the power steering pump high pressure hose---you may want to disconnect it as a precaution. Mark

Agreed. Remove the radiator shroud clips and raise with a block of wood under the oil pan. The new mounts will go in without issue.

Nick, no need to compress the engine mounts before installation if that's even possible. When replacing the engine mounts in two of our 124 cars I removed the engine mounting bracket and engine mount on each side as an assembly. Bolted the new engine mount to the engine mounting bracket and torqued it properly before reinstalling each assembly.

After reading some recent posts, and considering my experience with the driver's side engine mount, it's probably easier to leave the engine mounting bracket in place and use a stubby 17mm open end wrench to remove the bolt attaching the engine mount to the engine mounting bracket. Then tighten the bolt as much as possible after installing the new engine mount since there is no space to use a torque wrench.

Just a thought, you did remove the lower mounting bolts from both sides before trying to lift the engine?
