'98 CLK 320 almost out of warranty. . . anything I should watch out for?

Since the warranty will be up in about a week, I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of any issues that I should watch out for. . .

The only issue right now is the transmission: it acts up every once in awhile and sometimes slips while upshifting but the dealer can't seem to "reproduce" the problem. . . It's not serious but I'm afraid it will become serious eventually.

Anyone know of anything I should be aware of in the coming years?

I have the same problem with my 1998 C230. It is at the dealer for the 4th time. They replaced the valve body and controller the first time, rebuilt the trans the second time, and "couldn't find the problem" the next 2 times. It is sitting at the dealer with an open ticket, preventing the warranty from closing. I bought the Heritage warranty from the dealer a month ago to cover any problems, now it looks like they may not cover it as well as it needs!!! I am currently waiting for word back from the Shop Manager, who is talking to the regional rep. Next step will be the dealer General Manager, then the MB rep, then MBUSA, California Bureau of automotive repair, etc. You DON'T want to get stuck with a transmission bill, or on 'goodwill' for repair.

These threads may give more info:

I read those other threads and I've been having a similar problem with my dealer!!! I already got the updated throttle body and software installed/replaced on the tranny about a year ago. However, there is still some intermittent slippage present, especially when the car upshifts to 3rd at about 40-45 mph.

I made this aware to my dealer and they said the exact same thing: "Well, we didn't find any codes so there isn't anything wrong"

I stressed to them that since the warranty will almost be up, I don't want to be stuck with the bill when the tranny does go!!

They told me that since the problem is documented and has been for the past year that I shouldn't need to worry about it. . . I've been a customer with the local dealer here for 20 years and this is the first time they've reacted like this. . .

I'm beginning to wonder if the 722.6 tranny is the next "evaporator" or "head gasket" or "wiring harness" issue that MB will flat out deny for decades to come.

For a '98 CLK, I would get a warranty extension and not depend on good will. Just a suggestion, Andrew Seidel.

If you don't get a warranty extension, at least report this problem to the dealer in written in detail before your warranty gets over. At least you will have evidence of reporting a problem, so that if anything happens later, there is at least some chance that whole or part of the repair bill may be covered.

Just a suggestion. I am a great fan of written documentation!
