W124 - Trunk Liner removal

I'm getting the E420 painted, and removing what I can, like the front and rear bumper covers.

The rear bumper cover removal requires removing 6 nuts in the trunk, two in the center and two on each side.

But the four nuts on the sides nuts are 'hidden' behind the liner.

So how do I remove the liner? On my 300E, I just 'pulled the liner off' With the E420, I'd like to be a bit more gentle.

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated

There are a bunch of black circular fasteners.
Pull the centre pins out - use a flat blade screwdriver if necessary to prise the head up. Then the rest of the fastener will pull out.
Re-installation is the reverse: insert the main body and then push in the centre pin to lock.

Bill, remove the trunk carpet. First remove the rear panel (covering the gas tank) because it holds the side panels in place. There are 2 clips under the hat shelf that secure the rear panel. Bend those down slightly to release the tabs on the rear panel. Gently pull the rear panel in the center towards you so each side comes out of the slot in each side panel, and remove from trunk. Starting at each tail light gently work each side panel towards the center of the trunk and out. There is one clip at the top of each side panel that should release easily.
