m103 tensioner shock damper question

I have a 1989 300sel that is making the same sound when the rubber goes bad on the shock/damper. Last year the same thing happened(same type noise as now) and I changed the rubber on the top of the shock. Solved problem. Now it is doing it again but when I push a screw driver on the top of shock the noise remains.

My question is can the bottom eyelet of shock go bad too? The noise seems to be centered there
Thanks
Warren

Yes, the bottom can go as well. On my M104 I had to replace the whole enchilada.

and did you have to pull the fan, shroud etc to do so? I pushed a screw driver on bottom one but no change but I see metal between yoke and frame

replace the whole shock, not too expensive and will last quite a while, bottom bolt on shock is kinda hard too access but you if you can squeeze your hand in there you can use a 1/4 inch drive set and universal socket and get it out,if not take the fan shroud off and move it forward fan is still in the way but you should be able to remove the bolt, good luck.

Thanks...but I have to ask this question...that shroud does not move too much anywhere...what do you mean forward? only goes about an inch or so. Anybody ever cut the shroud in half and put attachment clips on it?

Thanks
