Replacing Shifter Bushings

Looseness in the shifter requires some new bushings. It would be a lot easier if the car was on a lift! Not sure if I have the patience to do this:

It's not too bad; I've done it several times.

I just did them on the E320 and the 300sd few days ago. I used ramps and also put a floor jack under the left rear jack point and raised the body (without lifting the wheel off the ground) to get few more inches of wiggle room. The special tool is magic and well worth the investment, even if you only use it once.

you can cut the diagonally and push them in the hole with a screwdriver - it does not affect its functionality at all. btw the installation tool is worth the buy - one snap and you're done.

Ive done it a couple of times and putting them in the microwave just enough to soften them up, they go in no problem.

Shifter Bushings

OK.............

I will put it on the to do list. Working on my back without a hoist is a pain

Recently replaced my steering damper along with a stubborn center drag link that needed a lot of encouragement while laying on my back. Still have fresh memories of that experience! LOL!

Got underneath to inspect the suspect bushings. The rear one is almost gone and the joint is loose but the front bushing looks intact and tight. I will tackle the rear one tomorrow and see if the replacement makes a big difference. Eventually, I am sure the front bushing will need replacement sooner or later.

Driver door check inspection/lube/replacement is next on the list.

Rear Bushing Replaced!

Made a big difference! Rear bushing was almost completely gone! Shifter is now firmer and hopefully no more vibration noises. Front bushing still OK for now!
