used windshield from a junkyard ?

Hi everybody. I wonder if any of you have experience with used windshields? My windshield is cracked on my 1987 260E . The local junkyard has one he says will fit as its from a 1987 300E. Pretty much the same car. He wants a $100 Canadian dollar for it. My question is, it is advisable to go with used windshield? And at $100 is it good price? I haven't checked how much it is new. But it can't be too expensive can it?

You can have an aftermarket unit installed for a total of around $200 in the mid-Atlantic region. Once you buy the glass then what? Take a peek at the online service manuals, see what's involved before you buy it.

Doesn't your insurance cover it?

I would not pay that for a used windshield, especially if it's not already out of the car. If it's already out of the car it's worth $25 to me CAD or USD, not one farthing more. The act of removing a windshield from a car usually trashes it.

Some things you just don't want to buy used.

Umm...I paid $140 for a PPG (Pilkington now), and that was installed. I had to call a few places that weren't upcharging for when they heard "Mercedes". Front glass is cheap and available for the W124.

I called one of the local windshield centers and they quote over $300. I guess I will have to call around some more.

Yes, they will probably pay the $300 or $400 for it. Then next month they will raise my monthly insurance rate by $50/month. They will make it back in couple months. You have no idea what insurance companies are like in Canada.

Windshield

Buy a new windshield!

A used one could have chips and will certainly be pitted to a certain extent.
