Quick Question regarding replacing NSS W124

I have been having to start my 1989 300TE by holding the key in start and pulling the gear lever down a bit. it use to be very infrequent but now it is pretty constant.

Ordered a new NSS to be installed later this week. the job looks easy enough, I am assuming all the difficulties with replacing it is from the lack of clearance.

anyways my question is: Do you have to do a ATF flush to swap a NSS? as in does ATF fluid gush out after you remove the NSS?

I remember reading this somewhere but not sure if the information was right i ordered a filter as it is on the to do list, but i may end up getting to that another day.

thanks

no atf, just 2 screws and the connector. i'd bet the shifter bushings are shot and the cause of the problem, not the switch. good luck, chuck.

Other than close quarters the trick to the NSS job is getting it aligned correctly, which is accomplished with a 4mm pin through two parts into the case.

If you need more room, put a jack under the transmission pan (using a piece of wood to protect it), remove the four bolts holding the cross member on and slowly lower the transmission a few inches. This should give you more room. No oil will come out. I just posted how to adjust the NSS within the last week. It is not hard at all.

thanks,

I ordered through peach part, 2 shifter bushings and 2 clips. i think there was a how to DIY that said those were the quantities needed.

and thank you for the tip with the transmission. I probably will be needing it.

update:

got under the car to tackle the job today, wasn't as bad as i thought. The bushing looked good but i was glad to have the parts on hand. took me about and hour and a half (i tried to disconnect the lever without taking the bolt completely out for half an hour before i realized it is notched around the bolt).

the top bolt was a pain and having the new switch to reference where the bolt was helped a lot
