I wasn't really looking to buy a new a car, as my '89 300SE still looks good, runs perfect and everything, right down to the dash clock, still works, but a local general auction house had a '95 S420 coming up with 65,000 miles on it and I thought it might go cheap. I looked at it and it was near perfect but the auction estimate was 8 to 10 thousand, which was more than I wanted to pay. However, during the process, I did some research on eBay, Craig's List, Kelly Blue book etc. to see what they were going for and I found this '97 S500 with 110,000, one owner on Craig's List listed at an asking price of $5900 which I thought was very low. I drove it and it was nice so I did a bit of dickering with the owner, and wound up buying it for $4800. It even came with a set of newly new Bridgestone Blizzaks as an extra!
Anyway, it has a few issues as you can see from my posts, but I'm working through them without spending too much, the biggest expense being new discs and pads all around. Hopefully I'll have it all sorted out for around a grand.
It's a great car to drive, huge power and excellent handling, loaded with nice features and lovely to look at. It's also black on black, my favorite. It's a little scary though, very complex and can be expensive to make right when things go wrong, still I'm very happy to have it. My biggest problem is deciding what to do with my 300SE. It's still a very nice car, so I hate to let it go, especially if it went cheap, but we have 2 drivers and 5 cars so it's kinda hard to keep them all.
