300E blower motor problem

Hey guys,

I got a 1991 Mercedes 300E. The blower motor doesn't work when the car is on. However, when you FIRST start the car it'll run for a second then stop. Now the facts are: I have been starting the car with a screw driver for awhile since the ignition tumbler was on its way out. One mechanic guarantees that its the ignition switch that is causing the motor not to work. Another thing is, the wire that fuses the circuit is outside of the fuse box, i believe its a 25 amp in wire. Anyways previous owner said that the wire had problems and i can see where it was taped back together. I checked the fuse and it is fine, and the wires are connected properly. My question is, do you think it is a good guess that its the ignition switch? And where is the fan speed regulator, because im pretty sure only one setting works if not any (hence a problem). I have the full online service manual, so you can reference that. Any help would greatly be appreciated, its cold out! Thanks

The blower motor regulator/resistor is located directly beneath the blower motor.

wow that is the worst location ever. The regulator/resistor that controls the different fan speeds?

ok Thanks, any idea to suspect a faulty ignition switch since the blower works for a second when the car is first started?

Well it's a possibility. Why not just change out the ignition?

i've replaced a hundred or so ignition switches on the 124s for that same fan problem.

Really!!?? That's what I wanted to hear, thanks for the reassurance. I will let you guys know. Do you know of any DIY links to get the ignition out as easily as possible? Thanks again

I hope some of you guys subscribed to this thread. So I replaced the ignition switch, it wasn't the easiest thing. When i had the instrument cluster out and the underneath padding removed, I installed the new ignition switch and reassembled the ignition unit. I then hooked up the battery to test the ignition set up, the car fired right up and air was blowing in my face!!! So i jumped for joy and WAS really happy. Then I reassembled the instrument cluster and put everything back into place. Went for a test drive and no blower motor . I'm so upset! Also this car use to have running lights on at all times along with the instrument cluster illuminated, but now I have to turn it on manually with the switch on the left, any ideas as to why that happened? and why or what I should do about the blower motor? Thanks
