Safe or legal disposal of drivers seat belt retractor module. ( 2001 E320 sedan.)

Have just replaced drivers seat belt retractor, it has WARNING all over it and I need to junk the old one.

Apparently it is considered a 'pyrotechnical device'........ Mercedes would not ship it to me without great expense so I picked it up from dealer parts dept'.

Any suggestions on a safe and responsible way to do so?

Since you bought a replacement from a dealer why not ask them to dispose of it?

If not, most counties have a Household Hazardous Waste program. Although most have restrictions so you'd have to check.

Finally, you can try a Hazardous Waste Disposal company in your area but you may find the cost staggering.

Dealer option? Too far...90 miles round trip.

Disposal companies? This is Oklahoma !...You know, no state emission testing, no safety inspection or running lights on trailers, that Oklahoma !

Note: This is an active pre tensioner. It was replaced due to belt webbing damage, not collision induced activation..

Its just a small pyrotechnic charge, you could just set it off. Safely of course, DYODD.
