W210 Fluids

I have a 2000 E320 4Matic wagon and I want to change some fluids as it is new to me and so I have no idea if there has been service in that respect. I know the Trans takes special fluid and so that will be in the spring. My question is I would like to change transfer/diff fluids so what can I use? I cant seem to find any definitive answers, just opinions and arguments. I am an Amsoil dealer and of course would like to use my products. It says that the transfer case takes syn trans fluid but would like that verified. What about the diffs? Syn 75w 90 be ok? Dealers will not help so no point in suggesting I call. Anyone know if off brand products be ok?

Check the Owner's Manual. Typically there's a section in the back of the Owner's Manual titled "Fuels, Coolants, Lubricants, etc. - Capacities".

It says, use MB part number such and such. I want to know if I can use off the shelf products. Good ones but off the shelf none the less

Yes. It's your car and you can put whatever you want into it. You will get plenty of opinions on aftermarket products and how they are 'superior' according to the seller. I guess it comes down to how lucky you feel.

MB published a list of factory recommended fluids and filters back in 2007. To my knowledge it is still the most current recommendation. Most are not specific to W210 but to model year ranges such as oil, etc. In case you or someone else is interested it's here -

Well thanks for sending that but that does what you would expect. Recommends MB fluids for everything. Of course they would. All I want to know is there just plain gear oil in the diffs and trans in the transfer case? MB is 150 miles from here and I really dont want to pay $20 for a litre of gear oil if it is no different than any other gear oil.

I think a lot of people use the Mobil 1 synthetic 75W-90 for a non-antispin differential. Spec says high quality hypoid gear oil. I think transfer cases are a little more strict but since I don't have a 4Matic not sure.

Hope that helps some.

I've had M1 synthetic in my rear differential (2WD) for almost 40,000 miles, zero issues or complaints. As Richard says many have done that. Some use Redline; Amsoil is good stuff, I can't imagine it would create a problem.

Can't speak to 4matic usage, though.

Good luck.

Good, I can go with that, Amsoil is what it will get. Now what about the Transfer Case? I assume it takes either straight oil or trans fluid. I was going to use Amsoil Trans fluid if that is ok in that.

C Holmes, the best approach would be to research the specs of each MB fluid then see if the comparable Amsoil product meets/exceeds those specs.
