Power retractable side mirror problem

Hi Guys,

On the 2004 ML500 we use the power retract mirrors every day pulling in and out of the garage. Recently, when bringing the mirrors in, as it comes to the point where it should stop, the mechanism continues trying to bring it in more and it ratchets against the stop a few times.

Is this a common problem, easy to fix? Thanks in advance!!

Well, I figured I would update this one and see if there are any thoughts on this. I guess it isn't so common or I would have turned up more in a search.

If nothing, I'll take it apart and see what I can find!

Not sure if we're working on cars this new yet You should be able to disassemble the mirror assembly and see what is going on. Maybe someone will check in soon. Wish I had an MB with retractable mirrors! Good luck!

Hi sptt, thanks for the reply!

I know exactly what you mean. I've been here for over 10 years and I participated a lot more when I had the cars that are more common to the board, the 300E and the E320.

I found some info on "another board", and looked into it last night. The upper aluminum hinge that the mirror swings on is broken. This probably happened from someone walking into the mirror in a parking lot. So, I will have to look into the options and costs for replacing it. I don't think you can buy parts, so it's either fab a new piece, find a good used part, or we can always live with it, although I hate to let a car deteriorate.

Thanks again!

Call your local MB dealer. You'll be surprised as to what they carry on hand.
If you do the job, post some pics and directions because you know that will happen to someone

I called them and I was surprised alright!!

The "main bracket" is $915

I'm glad I picked a low deductible for my comprehensive insurance!
