OK folks, I replaced the plugs, wires and distrubitor cap, replaced fuel filter and checked the fuel pump, its good, started her up and she ran fine for ten minutes and then went right back to backfiring thru the air intake plentium and running lousey, finially stalling and then wouldn't start again. The backfiring is what's getting me, why should it be running fine one minute and backfiring the next???

OK disconected the cam sensor, still no good, thanks it was something I hadn't tried, at least it elimanates one more thing, I don't see a crankshaft sensor anywhere, maybe this motor doesn't have any, Wayne

Crank shaft sensor (on my M104) in on the rear of the engine down by the flywheel area, under the oil filter housing.

Right, it should be back there.
Also still questioning the existance of a cam sensor on a CIS car. The part I am suggesting disconnecting is the cam advance solenoid, if this acted up (got applied for some reason) then possibly could backfire through the intake.

Only other thought on that is that the rotor bracket is broken. I've seen those break and cause problems, sometimes in time, sometimes not, very odd stuff depending on the break.

Variable valve timing on M104 engine. Never studied details, sorry.

Yes there is "variable" valve timing on the 104 (pretty sure on a cis engine too, you seem to be confirming that, which is good, memory getting foggy). BUT it is either advanced or non advanced, so "variable" here means one of 2 positions.
And still questioning a sensor for the cam. The only purpose I can think of for it is for the ecm to monitior whether it is advanced or not??? Which doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense to me. Normally the cam position sensor is used for fuel injection purposes on a SFI engine, but this engine is not SFI it is CIS.
