Low Miles 1990 300E: How much could I get if I parted it out?
I just acquired a low miles (103,000) 1990 300E. My intention is to fix some minor things then sell it. How much might I get if I parted it out? Especially with the low miles, seems like it might be an option worth considering.
Thanks.

Might want to consider what your time is worth.
Lots of effort required to part out. Big parts hard to ship, and you have to deal with the guy who wants a smaller part, asks for a quote for shipping, and after you remove it, box it, weigh it and respond, they tell you they can get it for a dollar less at XYZ....... Right now, scrappers are paying close to $300 for a stripped W124 with engine in place. You can probably get another 500 to 1,000 for parts, but your going to have a lot of time invested. If you look at it as relaxation/therapy, it's no big deal, but if your time can be applied elsewhere for money, parting is not a good deal. I've parted out a lot of cars, but I'd be real reluctant to part out a decent running, good looking car, the time/value part isn't there. Fix the minor things, then sell. Now, if you wanted the interior (or other significant parts) for one of your other cars, then parting out makes sense. Jim

To echo Jim, what's your time worth? Some items take forever to properly remove (think complete headlight wiper wiring harness) for $30? Never again. I usually have one being parted, but not always on purpose. Others were purchased for specific parts for my own use (think hyperactive border collie who chews through wagon only seat belts). It's beer money, no return on your time investment. I also don't charge myself rent on the shed space. I've lost sales because of price...Sure you can get a dashboard at the pick and pull for $20, but if you want me to remove it, properly pack it and ship, then its going to be more. I'll match the $20 but only if you come and get it without destroying anything else. Also, lots of "I'll buy that part", but after too many emails (more time), payment never happens. It does however keep good "stuff" in circulation for others to use.

So I'm curious if you ever resold the car as I'm looking at a '90 this weekend with similar miles.
Trying to figure out a price/market value on cars these old is quite the trick, so I'd be curious if you had any luck selling it, and if so would you be so kind to share what it was bought and sold for? PM works if you wouldn't want to share publicly. thanks in advance.
