'84 190E Heater Fan squealing

Hi Folks,
My 1984 190E heater fan had been squealing (more with recycle air switch on) now it's sounding like a small air plane. Are the fan/blower bearings shot?

thanks,
Clay

I had that problem. Whatever fiberglass insulation they use inside the dash had wrapped itself around the motor shaft on both ends, binding it up. Other than that and dry bushings it didn't seem like there was anything worn. I just applied a few drops of transmission fluid to the bushings at both ends after I removed the insulation from the motor shafts and reinstalled, works like new.

Mine is a W124 and the motor is making high pitched squeaks, are they easy to get at? To remove and tinker with, I mean?

I had the small airplane engine sound coming from my blower. It was pretty bad. I ended up buying a replacement motor for like $100 and swapping the existing squirrel cages on it and installing it. Problem solved.

I was to the point where I'd pretty much lost the low speeds due to bad bearings.

I pulled the motor on my car and lubricated the bearings several times, allowing the oil to soak for a few hours. Next day, wiped off the excess oil on the bearings, and reinstalled it. Started squealing again the next day, then quieted down. Now, I hardly hear any noise.

BUT, because the motor did squeal again, I went ahead and bought a new motor and blower wheels. I'll be replacing the OEM motor sometime in the future.
