Stuck/Non Working Tripometer Repair

Hello everyone,

My 190E's trip never worked. It was always stuck at 0. While replacing my speedometer cable today I decided to investigate.

I found that a metal bar had moved out of position. This was causing the digits not to move. Simply repositioning the bar fixed the problem!

My odometer has been working fine, just the trip was out. Half of it was stuck in reset mode due to the pin not being in the correct position

You are lucky that bar was out of position only.
I am having same problem and when I inspected it, plastic surround that this bar goes through is broken, so can't make it work yet.

NOTE: Never ever try to reset odo while car is in motion, only when you are stand still reset it. Learned it hard way :-(

Will replacing the speedo cable totally eliminate the dancing needle, even in the cold weather??

Rebe,

I believe replacing the speedo cable will fix the dancing problem UNLESS the problem is in the speedometer itself.

Well it looks like I've broken it again, I reset it a few weeks ago and now it's just ticking as it tries to go past 0 tenths. I think maybe the bar was like it was for this reason. I'll have to pull it and check sometime here in tue future. Maybe after I finish up the 420Sel.

Odometer Gears - WELCOME sells rebuild kits for these. Pretty easy to install with mild mechanical skills.

Thanks for the link! They also appear to have gears for the wiper assembly as well.

I've not driven my car yet so fingers crossed that it doesnt tick anymore. I noticed that it had great difficulty in resetting, not all the wheels would easily reset to 0. I disassembled my spare 190E 2.3 odometer just to observe its inner working, it seems the reset much easier.

It appear that the reset lever performs two tasks.

1) remove the sprockets from the bottom of the digits, unlocking them
2) 'fingers' come down in the back and press into each digit forcing it back to 0. There appears to be a 'D' shape on the side of each digit wheel that forced it back to 0.

I too have a trip meter that will not zero, it feels like something came off. The button dose not feel like it is making good contact with what ever it should make contact with, though it is still hooked to some part of the unit because you can move the numbers slightly.

If your trip odometer is questionable...you need to be really cautious about resetting it. As mentioned above, you can't be moving when you do so...

The trick to getting it working again is pushing the reset button just right such that ALL the digits are precisely aligned. If not, it'll slip and click every 10th of a mile or thereabouts.

I spent about 20 minutes pushing the button before I got it just right and working again. I even synched it up with the main odometer at xxx,000 such that the numbers lined up when I rolled over 249,999 . It's probably been left alone (working) for 15k miles.

I did have a similar problem with the trip odo in my wagon. I never did rebuild it, I found if I hit the reset several times and make sure everything goes all the way back to zero it works fine...

I fixed my daughter's odometer by bending the pin in the middle either up or down (just a hair). Can't remember which way I bent it but I used a power drill (into the speedo cable recess) to test it before I put it back in and it worked from there on out. Had same symptoms being discussed in this thread. Wouldn't reset or advance past 10.
