Question C230 shifter knob

How do you remove the gear shift knob on a 1997 C 230?

There is a little conical sleeve on the bottom of the shifter knob.

Grasp the sleeve (wearing rubber gloves will help you have enough friction if necessary) and turn it counter-clockwise. It will rotate about 90 degrees and then be loose. Let it drop down, then lift the shifter knob off.

If it is stuck, rotate it gently just a couple of degrees in each direction, and wiggle it some too. If it still won't free up, VERY GENTLY pry the plastic tangs (that are hanging down on the knob) free from the notch in the shift lever, then lift it off.

Good luck.

Is this the same procedure for a manual transmission. Local dealer told me the manual shift knob is attached to the rod (going into the console). I guess the dealer might only be able to order the knob as a kit.

I was looking to replace the gear shift knob on a W203 (2006) C230 Sport ... checked a few sources ... did not see anything with 6-speed pattern on the knob.
