1989 190e dead! Now what to buy.

The 1989 190e has been totaled, rear ended. 135000 miles. Now my kid has 7000 to buy a car, asked me for advice. Has to be automatic, efficient on gas, r hatchback or wagon for bicycle. I am at a loss, I have nothing but old cars and haven't kept up with the newer models, Newest car Ive owned is a 95 suburban,

What is your personal recommendation and experience.
